Stunning timber bifold doors and windows installation in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire

Just imagine lying in bed on a summer morning, gazing at the countryside through beautiful floor-to-ceiling apex picture windows. Well, that will be the future for the occupants of these two fabulous houses, where Enfield Windows have just completed a large installation.

The pair of properties, in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, were constructed to a high specification by the builder, our client, who wanted the very best quality timber windows and doors to complete his project. The advantages of timber over PVC or aluminium are the perfect flush casement style finish and detailed panelling that cannot be replicated by synthetic materials.

A major project for Enfield Windows

The scale of this project was considerable: six sets of timber bi-fold doors, two entrance doors and two back doors, two gable windows and no fewer than twenty timber casement windows! The colour scheme for all of them was the same – “silk grey” (in the RAL colour chart number 7044.)

Our task began when the client’s architect contacted Enfield Windows to request a quotation based on scaled drawings containing sizes, configurations, opening directions and the colour choice. With the large number of items involved, our sales team constructed a detailed and descriptive quotation for a competitive package, so the client could visualise each item with its specification.

Costs agreed and contract drawn up

With only a few tweaks and amendments required, the project cost was agreed, the contract drawn up and every item listed for total clarity, so that our processing team, surveyor and client were all in sync. Then, after the contract was signed and deposit paid, our operations department arranged for our in-house surveyor to visit the site.

The surveyor has been with Enfield Windows for 25 years and has a wealth of experience in the industry. His task was to discuss with the client and his architect important details such as minimum thresholds for the bi-folding doors and to reaffirm all the window opening directions.

Precision design and perfect fabrication

After the site survey, all the items were processed and sent to order, with computer-assisted design, or CAD drawings, made for the larger items. These are re-checked on site to ensure that the products will fit perfectly into the pre-made apertures.

The manufacturing process is typically eight to nine weeks for our timber windows and doors, in three distinct phases: construction, painting and glazing. After that, of course, comes the shipping and installation.

In the construction phase, frames based on the surveyed sizes were signed off and CADs were made using state-of-the-art programmed machinery (CNC), which guarantees perfect fabrication to the millimetre.

Painting, glazing and installation

The paint process is itself in three parts. First, the frames in their raw state enter an airtight spray booth to receive an anti-fungal treatment, then a primer base coat and finally a Remmers microporous topcoat. Remmers is a leading independent paint supplier based in Germany whose products give excellent water resistance with a smooth and even finish.

When they are finished in the paint spray booths, the windows are dried and sent to the glazing phase. The frames are laid flat, the glass packed in and sealed on both sides for a flawless airtight finish. They are then placed in a protective wrap to ensure they arrive on site in perfect condition.

The final phase, installation, took eight days and was completed to Enfield Windows’ usual high standard by our expert team of installers.
